Interesting to note that many members of Bahaullah\u2019s family were Ex-Communicated by Abdul-Baha and Shoghi Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mirza Husayn Ali Commonly called \u201cBaha\u201d or \u201cBaha\u2019u\u2019llah\u201d was the founder and prophet of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Faith. He was born in 1817 to Khad\u00edjih Kh\u00e1num and M\u00edrz\u00e1Buzurg of Nur (in the province of Mazandaran), a Persian man, and went on to be a follower of Islam than follower in the B\u00e1b\u00ed movement\/Faith, and then established the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Faith in 1863.<\/p>\n<p>He married:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Asiya<\/li>\n<li>BiBi Fatima<\/li>\n<li>Gawhar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Asiya surnamed Nawwaba (Highness)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Asiya is stated to have been surnamed the mother of the Universe. This is denied by the followers of Mirza Muhammad Ali and dismissed as devoid of historical foundation.<\/p>\n<p>To his first wife (Asiya) he gave the title Nawwaba, because she was the daughter of Nawwab of Tehran (Avareh, Al\u2010Kawakib\u2010al\u2010Durriyya by Awara, vol. 2, p. 4, Materials,p. 62).<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1s\u00edyih was \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1 h\u201d\u2019s first and best\u2010known wife. She was a daughter of a nobleman, Mirza Isma\u2019il\u2010i\u2010Vazir. Her date of birth is not known. They married sometime between 24 September and 22 October, 1835 in Tehran and she had seven of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s children, of whom only three made to adulthood. She was given the title Navv\u00e1b by which she is best known within Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed circles. She died in 1886 in `Akk\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>She bore him:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Abbas<\/li>\n<li>Bahiyya or Sultan<\/li>\n<li>M\u00edrz\u00e1 Mihd\u00ed<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Navv\u00e1b bore at least three other children, but due to their early deaths little is known about them<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>S\u00e1diq who died aged 3\u2010\u06f4<\/li>\n<li>Al\u00ed Muhammad who died in M\u00e1zandar\u00e1n at the age of 7<\/li>\n<li>Al\u00ed Muhammad who was born and died in Baghdad at the age of 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Abbas<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Born in 1844 and died 1921 He was the oldest child of \u00c1s\u00edyih and Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll \u00e1 h. He was variously referred to by Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h as \u201cMystery of God\u201d, \u201cThe Master\u201d, \u201cPerfect Exemplar\u201d and \u201cthe Greatest Branch\u201d. \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d went on to be the Centre of the Covenant of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Faith after the death of His father.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, he bore attacks from his half\u2010brother Muhammad `Al\u00ed, who was not given a leadership role or authority by \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d. Muhammad `Al\u00ed claimed that \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d was taking on too much authority; Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds refute this claim by citing \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s Lawh\u2010i\u2010Ghusn (Tablet of the Branch) (National Spiritual Assembly of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds of the United States (ed.) (1943-1976). Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed World Faith: Selected Wri tings of B\u00e1ha\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h and Abdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1, pp. 204\u2010\u06f2\u06f0\u06f7), Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Ahd (The Book of the Covenant) (Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h [1873\u2010\u06f9\u06f2] (\u06f1\u06f9\u06f9\u06f4). Tablets of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h Revealed After the Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas, pp. 219\u2010\u06f2\u06f2\u06f3), and the Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas (The Most Holy Book) (Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h [1873] (1992). The Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas: The Most Holy Book, para. 121) as clear appointments of \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d as his sole successor and interpreter of his writings. The struggle led to increasingly deteriorating prison conditions until \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d was released after the Turkish Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>During Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u2019s lifetime, he referred to his eldest son, Abb\u00e1s, by terms such as \u201cSirru\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d (Mystery of God), or \u201cSark\u00e1r\u2010i\u2010\u00c1q\u00e1\u201d (the Master). After the passing of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d, he chose the title \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d (Servant of Bah\u00e1).<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Bahiyya or Sultan surnamed the Supreme Leaf (Waraqa\u2010i\u2010Ulya)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>She died a spinster.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1846 she was called Bah\u00edyyih Kh\u00e1num and entitled the Greatest holy Leaf. She was particularly dear to her father and is seen within the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Faith as one of the greatest women to have lived:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVerily, we have elevated thee to the rank of one of the most distinguished among thy sex, and granted thee, in My court, a station such as none other woman hath surpassed.\u201d (Baha\u2019u\u2019llah, quoted in The Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed World, vol. 4, p.171)<\/p>\n<p>She stood by and remained faithful to the Centers of the Covenant over years of infighting within the \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s family that led to the expelling of many of them. Shoghi Effendi in particular felt her support during difficult times such as the passing of \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d, and in the years afterwards when she was entrusted with the Faith when he was absent from the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed World Center in Haifa.<\/p>\n<p>She died on 15 July 1932 was buried in the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed gardens below the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Arc on Mount Carmel not far from her two brothers and mother. The shock to the administration meant that religious festivals were suspended for nine months.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>M\u00edrz\u00e1 Mihd\u00ed<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>M\u00edrz\u00e1 Mihd\u00ed in 1868<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1848 and entitled the Purest Branch, M\u00edrz\u00e1 Mihd\u00ed died on 23 June 1870. He was chanting Qasidiy\u2010i\u2010Varqa\u2019iyyih (a poem written by \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d in Kurdistan) (Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h [1873] (1992). The Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas: The Most Holy Book, para. 121) when he fell through a skylight in the prison city of `Akk\u00e1 while pacing back and forth in prayer and meditation. He was 22 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The death is significant as Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds believe that \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d offered him the chance of being cured, however he chose to use his life as a sacrifice so that the prison gates would open and the pilgrims would be able to visit \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d in prison. It reflected one of the toughest times for them, but restrictions on them did lift in the years to come with them eventually being allowed to live a short distance outside the prison city.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00edrz\u00e1 Mihd\u00ed was eventually buried alongside his mother in the gardens below the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Arc on Mount Carmel in Haifa near his brother and sister.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>BiBi Fatima surnamed the Supreme Cradle (Mahd\u2010i\u2010Ulya)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Fatima surnamed the Supreme Cradle (Mahd\u2010i\u2010Ulya) born in 1828 and generally known as Mahd\u2010i\u2010\u2019Ulya, Fatimih was one of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s first cousins, and later become his second wife. They married in 1849 in Tehran and she had six of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u2019s children, of whom only four survived to adulthood. She was said to have harbored great enmity towards \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d. She died in 1904, BiBi Fatima and her four children were excommunicated by \u201cAbbas Effendi\u201d. To his second wife (BiBi Fatima) he gave the title \u2018The Supreme Cradle\u2019 [a title reserved for the Queen\u2010Mother in Iran, T.A p. 361] (al\u2010Kawakib, ibid, p.8; Materials, p.63)<\/p>\n<p>She bore him:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Muhammad Ali<\/li>\n<li>Samadiyya<\/li>\n<li>Ziyaullah<\/li>\n<li>Badiullah<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>BiBi Fatima (Mahd\u2010i\u2010\u2019Ulya) bore at least two other children:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>`Al\u00ed Muhammad who died at the age of 2 in Baghdad<\/li>\n<li>S\u00e1dhajiyya Kh\u00e1nim who was born in Baghdad and died at the age of 2 in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Constantinople<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Muhammad Ali<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Born in Baghdad in approximately 1852, his father called him the \u201cGreater Branch\u201d. When \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d declared \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d his successor, he set that Muhammad `Al\u00ed was next in rank after him. (Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h [1873\u2010\u06f9\u06f2] (\u06f1\u06f9\u06f9\u06f4). Tablets of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h Revealed After the Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas, p. 221). When \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d died, his Will went into great detail about how Muhammad `Al\u00ed had been unfaithful to the Covenant, labelling him a Covenant\u2010breaker (`Abdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1 [\u06f1\u06f9\u06f0\u06f1\u2010\u06f0\u06f8] (\u06f1\u06f9\u06f9\u06f2). The Will and Testament of \u2018Abdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1, p. 5), and appointing Shoghi Effendi his successor instead.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammad `Al\u00ed is often described as the \u201cArch\u2010Breaker of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u2019s Covenant\u201d (Shoghi Effendi (1944). God Passes By, p. 263 &amp; p.317). He died in 1937.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Samadiyya, (married 37)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>She was born at Baghdad. Married Majdu\u2019d\u2010Din (son of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s faithful brother Aqay\u2010i\u2010Kalim also known as Mirz\u00e1 Musa), who was one of \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d\u2019s greatest critics. Both were eventually declared Covenant\u2010breakers. She died at age 49 in 1904\/5 and her husband died at over one\u2010hundred years of age in 1955.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Ziyaullah<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Relatively little is known about D\u00edy\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h (Ziyaullah), so it is difficult to piece together an accurate account of his life, but we do know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Born 15 August 1864 in Edirne (modern day Adrianople)<\/li>\n<li>Married Thurayya<\/li>\n<li>He swayed between the two sides in his brothers\u2019 argument, and died before taking part in an act against \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d, but has still been labelled a Covenant\u2010breaker<\/li>\n<li>He died in 30 October 1898 (without issue) and was buried in the room next to where \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d was buried<\/li>\n<li>His body was moved by relatives to a building covering the grave of his brother Muhammad `Al\u00ed<\/li>\n<li>In 1965 the Universal House of Justice removed his body from the vicinity of the Shrine of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h as an act of purification. Tablets of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h Revealed After the Kit\u00e1b\u2010i\u2010Aqdas, p. 221)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Badiullah<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gawhar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Gawhar was \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s third wife. They are said to have married in Baghdad<\/p>\n<p>sometime before he declared his mission. When \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d left Baghdad in<\/p>\n<p>\u06f1\u06f8\u06f6\u06f3 she and her daughter stayed and lived with her brother Mirza Mihdiy\u2010i\u2010<\/p>\n<p>Kashani. Later, on her way to join \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d and the family she is reported to<\/p>\n<p>have been taken captive along with other believers, and for some years she was<\/p>\n<p>among the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed refugees in Mosul. She later went to Akk\u00e1 at \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>instruction. (Letter from Universal House of Justice: 1998, Apr 06, Memorandum re Wives of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h)<\/p>\n<p>Gawhar may have been a maid of the first wife of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d when he married<\/p>\n<p>her. A Brief Biography of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah)<\/p>\n<p>Both mother and daughter were declared Covenant\u2010breakers by Mirza Abbas Effendi after the death of \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d. Gawhar died during the ministry of \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d, thus between 1892 and 1921.<\/p>\n<p>She bore him:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>Furughiyya<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Relatively little is known about Furughiyyih so it is difficult to write a documented<\/p>\n<p>account. What is known is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Until her mother moved to Akk\u00e1, she was raised by her in the area around Mosul<\/li>\n<li>She married Siyyid Ali (the son of the B\u00e1b\u2019s brother\u2010in\u2010law) on 17 May 1886 and bore him two sons<\/li>\n<li>She, her husband and her children (in particular her eldest Nayyir), all rebelled against \u201cAbdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u201d\u2019s authority as Centre of the Covenant, and became Covenant\u2010breakers<\/li>\n<li>According to Shoghi Effendi she died of cancer (date unknown)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Abbas Married Munira, who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Ziyaiyya<\/li>\n<li>Tuba<\/li>\n<li>Ruha<\/li>\n<li>Munawwar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>Hadi Afnan married Ziyaiyya (9) who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Shoghi<\/li>\n<li>Ruh\u2010Angiz (married 25)<\/li>\n<li>Mihr\u2010Angiz (married 28)<\/li>\n<li>Husayn<\/li>\n<li>Riyadh<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u06f1\u06f3 to 15 were surnamed Rabbani. Mirza Hadi Afnan and their children (14\u2010\u06f1\u06f7) were excommunicated by Shoghi Effendi (13), on whom the title of Effendi was conferred by Mirza Abbas Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>Muhsin Afnan married Tuba\u00a0(\u06f1\u06f0), who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Ruhi (married 23)<\/li>\n<li>Suhayl<\/li>\n<li>Thuraiyya (married 27)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Muhsin Afnan, Tuba and their children were excommunicated by Shoghi Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li>Jalal Shahid married Ruha\u00a0(\u06f1\u06f1) who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Munir<\/li>\n<li>Hasan<\/li>\n<li>Zahra (married 18)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Jalal Shahid, Ruha and their children were excommunicated by Shoghi Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li>Ahmad Yazdi married Munawwar\u00a0(\u06f1\u06f2).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>No further detail found.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad Yazdi and Munawwar were excommunicated by Shoghi Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>Sayyid Ali Afnan married Furughiyya\u00a0(\u06f8) who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Husayn<\/li>\n<li>Nayyir (married 14)<\/li>\n<li>Hasan (married 15)<\/li>\n<li>Fawzi (married 20)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sayyid Ali Afnan, and Furughiyya were excommunicated by Abbas Effendi. Their children were excommunicated by Shoghi Effendi and Husayn posthumously.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Muhammad Ali (4) married<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>i)Masuma, who bore him:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"28\">\n<li>Shuaullah<\/li>\n<li>Aminullah<\/li>\n<li>ii) Hizariyya\u00a0who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Musa (married 35)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mirza Muhammad Ali, his wives and children were excommunicated by Abbas Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Majd\u2010al\u2010Din Musa\u00a0(\u06f3\u06f8)\u00a0married Samadiyya\u00a0(\u06f5) who bore him:<\/li>\n<li>Maryam<\/li>\n<li>Zar\u2010Azngiz<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Majd\u2010al\u2010Din Musa, Samadiyya and their children were excommunicated by Abbas Effendi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Ziyaullah (6) married Thuraiyya Samandar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>No further detail found. Ziyaullah and his wife were excommunicated by Abbas Effendi<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Badiullah married Aliya, who bore him:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"33\">\n<li>Sazitch<\/li>\n<li>Salah<\/li>\n<li>Ghamar (married 30)<\/li>\n<li>Iffat<\/li>\n<li>Ismat (married Jalal Azal)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Badiullah, Aliya and their children were excommunicated by Abbas Effendi. In this connection, \u201cBah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u201d<\/p>\n<p>entitled his descendants as follows:<\/p>\n<p>His male descendants were given the title of Aghs\u00e1n (Arabic for \u201cBranches\u201d) which in singular form is \u201cGhusn\u201d. A\u2018z\u0323am carries a higher status in Arabic, so Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed authors and others translate `Abdu\u2019l\u2010Bah\u00e1\u2019s title as \u201cMost Great\u201d and Muhammad `Al\u00ed\u2019s title as \u201cGreater\u201d (Taherzadeh, 2000, p. 256).<\/p>\n<p>Some authors have reversed the English translations (Maulana, 1933, p.56). However the designations of Ghusn\u2010i\u2010A\u2018z\u0323am and Ghusn\u2010i\u2010Akbar are clear.
